ACNE GETTING YOU DOWN ?

Acne scar treatment. Remove dark spots, depressions and deep scarring

At various points in our life, all of us have had acne. Of course we know it’s most associated with teens, but many adults suffer from it for many years later, especially through periods of stress or hormonal changes. Unfortunately for many of us, once the acne goes away, unsightly scars have remained. Acne scars form when the blemish becomes inflamed and damaged by the excess oil, dead cells and bacteria, breaking the follicle wall. The skin works to repair the wall with new collagen, but the repairs do not match the original skin. The result is a scar, where the skin may have an indent or a darker tone than the area around it.

At Fresh Faces Cosmetic Medicine, we see many patients who have endured years of acne and now have scarring and pock marks, which not only affects their appearance but their self confidence as well. There are a few treatments we can do to erase or minimize the appearance of acne scarring, boosting collagen from within and restoring a healthy smooth glow to your skin. Book a free consultation with us and we can help you to choose the right treatment for you.

What are the types of acne scar treatments available?

At Fresh Faces Cosmetic Medicine, we offer a few acne scar removal products and treatments. The most common locations for scars are along our cheeks, jawlines and foreheads. Scars are created when the collagen cannot repair the follicle walls to the same level as the surface of the skin, resulting in craters or depressions. Our treatments for this boost collagen, repairing the surface leaving a smooth, even complexion.

The treatment will vary for individuals, and it will largely depend on the severity of the scarring. The best acne scar removal products/treatments that we offer at Fresh Faces Cosmetic Medicine are, chemical peels, skin needling and IPL.

How does acne scar removal work?

Skin needling – By firstly breaking up the existing scar tissue and allowing your body’s own healing response to start the repair process.

Chemical Peels – Like exfoliation, a chemical peel encourages the top layer of your skin to be erased and removed at a rapid rate. This encourages the production of collagen to repair the surface, reducing scars and imperfections, leaving a smoother healthier appearance.

IPL – Intense Pulse Light is a form of laser treatment for acne scars that involves quick and intense pulses of light. The light targets dark spots or pigments in the skin and destroys them, and it encourages the production of collagen below the surface of the skin. Scars, depressions and wrinkles are reduced.

For any of the above options your treatment may be completed in one session, or multiple sessions may be required depending upon desired outcomes, the nature of the scarring and possible downtime.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your Fresh Faces Cosmetic Medicine acne scar removal experience

Free Consultation. First, before any procedure at our office, our patients receive a one-on-one free consultation with a doctor or registered nurse. The doctor/nurse will examine your skin and the severity of the scars, and then he or she will make a recommendation for the type of treatment that would be best. He/she will then walk you through the procedure and what you can expect. This is the best opportunity for you to ask any questions or address any concerns about pain, side effects, down time, and potential risks. Before your appointment, you should avoid the sun, and stop taking certain medications. After your consultation, the treatment can begin immediately.

Acne Scar Removal Treatment experience. Most patients for acne scar removal treatments can begin right after their initial consultations. The treatments are non-invasive, and all of them have the purpose of triggering the skin’s natural production of collagen to create a smooth and even texture on the surface of the skin.

Skin needling – After the numbing cream sets in, the doctor/nurse will take the ‘pen like’ device across the surface of your skin. The pen has hundreds of tiny needles that will slightly pierce the skin. These punctures in the skin will encourage the production of collagen and elastin, resulting in smooth, fresh texture and tone.

Chemical Peels – Chemical peels dissolve the top layer of the skin, and the layer that appears underneath is younger and smoother. It is a simple treatment for clearing acne scars, imperfections, sun damage, fine lines and age spots. The doctor will clean your skin, then apply the chemicals to your face, allow them to set in, and then massage the skin and wipe away the chemicals. There is discomfort during chemical peels, a burning or a stinging, but it is not severe enough to need anesthetic.

IPL – For IPL, short bursts of light target dark spots from acne scars in your skin, and destroy or vaporize them, and trigger the body’s natural production of collagen. The doctor/nurse will glide the apparatus across your skin, emitting the pulses of light. This procedure is not painful, with most patients commenting that if there is pain, it is similar to a mild sunburn. You can apply moisturizer and cold packs to your skin for comfort.

Expected ResultsAll of the treatments that we have at Fresh Faces Cosmetic Medicine that are used for acne scar erasing, focus on stimulating the skin’s own collagen production, repairing the surface leaving a smooth, even complexion. You will notice that dark spots are diminished, fine lines and wrinkles will also be less noticeable.

As one treatment does not dramatically remove all skin concerns, you may require multiple treatments for your ultimate skin rejuvenation. The number of treatments will depend on your skin concerns and desires.

Recovery time and possible side effects for acne scar removal

Your recovery time will depend on the treatment. For IPL there is no downtime, and you can return to work or your daily routine straight away. Your skin may look like you have a mild sunburn. For skin needling, the skin may be red and blotchy for 2-3 days as it heals. The recovery time for chemical peels will depend on the peel, and the severity of your scarring. The top layer of your skin will dry and peel after a few days. You will also have redness and feel as though you’ve had a sunburn. If your acne scarring is severe with deep impressions, requiring a more intense peel, you may have side greater effects which will be discussed prior to your treatment.

Avoid the sun, and once skin is healed from your treatment, use a full spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to protect against UVA and UVB rays
For a few days following the treatment, not apply foundation or powder makeup to your face
Do not take hot baths or hot showers for 48 hours after the treatment
To avoid infection, do not do strenuous exercise or any activity that causes excessive perspiration for 48 hours after the treatment.
Do not scratch or pick blisters or peeling skin, as this can cause irritation or infections

FAQ’s

Are acne scar removal treatments safe for my skin?

All of the acne scar removal treatments at Fresh Faces Cosmetic Medicine are topical and non-surgical. The risks are very low, and the results are always healthier, brighter skin. Each treatment has its own risks, especially if there is not proper care for the area after your procedure.

The most common side effects to all of the treatments are redness, tenderness of the skin, and mild pain, like that of a sunburn. The needling and chemical peels will have more risks as the wounds on the skin heal. Potential side effects or complications from needling and chemical peels include infection if the skin if not properly cared for, prolonged redness or grazing and hyper and/ or hypo pigmentation if you prematurely expose your skin to the sun.

Resurfacing of the skin can often cause the herpes virus to flare up (cold sores). If you suffer from cold sores, please let us know prior to your treatment. As there are always risks for infection or causing more damage, we do not recommend you try any of the acne scar treatments at home.

Have fears or concerns? “What if it hurts?”

If you’ve had thoughts like these, you’re not alone. We see patients with these concerns every single day, and we address all questions open and honestly in our consultations with every patient. Rest assured, there isn’t a concern we haven’t heard. With acne scar treatments, there is little pain or discomfort. What you must remember is to avoid the sun after the treatment, since your skin will be very sensitive to UV rays.

Are there any risks involved?
As with any medical procedure, there are risks involved and these will be explained to you before any treatment. Don’t worry though, with one of Perth’s most experienced cosmetic doctors, you’re in safe hands and can rely on us to be 100% honest and transparent with you at all times.
