Medical Grade Skin Needling

WANT TO REFRESH & REJUVENATE YOUR SKIN ?

Skin Needling: Rejuvenates skin for younger, flawless skin

One of the most popular treatments for wrinkles, scars and dark spots is skin needling.  It is also one of our collagen induction therapies. It rejuvenates your skin by creating micro injury in the deep dermis then allowing the skin’s natural healing process, which produces new collagen and elastin and regenerates and repairs damaged tissue. An ultra high frequency oscillating needle is moved over your face, to create tiny punctures on the surface. The skin then works to heal the punctures, resulting in a fresh, smooth complexion. Micro needling benefits are skin that is visibly lifted and brighter, and wrinkles and dark spots are diminished. Skin needling is not only for anti-aging, it is also a common treatment for the removal of acne scarring.

What is skin needling?

Skin needling uses a pen-like device to create thousands of tiny punctures along the top layer. The treatment rejuvenates the skin, by using your skin’s natural healing process to boost collagen. The punctures stimulate the growth of collagen and elastin, and reduce the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, scars and age spots. The skin repairs the wounds with collagen and elastin, leaving behind smoother, younger-looking skin that is tighter, with a less sagging appearance. The procedure is minimally invasive, with very little downtime.

It can take approximately 4-6 weeks for you to see the full results, but the results of skin needling can last for up to 2 years.

What to expect

Your Fresh Faces skin needling treatment experience.

Free Consultation. At Fresh Faces Cosmetic Medicine, we do free consultations for all patients who are considering treatments. This one-on-one time is the opportunity for you to ask all of your questions and relay all of your concerns with one of our doctors or registered nurses. For skin needling, we often get questions about the size of the needles, the pain level, and the downtime for recovery. The majority of the patients we see for skin needling are seeking treatments to tighten skin for a fresh, younger look, or to diminish dark spots or deep acne scarring. The doctor/nurse can also show you results from our previous patients, with micro needling before and after photos.

The doctor/nurse will explain all of the details of the procedure and what to expect. He/she will also examine your skin for any abnormalities that could increase risks or affect your results. Please be open and honest about your medical history, particularly any ailments that affect your skin, blood flow, or healing times. It is best that your skin is also free of wounds or sun tan or sunburns. You should also consult our office before you appointment if you are taking certain medications.

Skin Needling Treatment. If you are in generally good health and there are no causes for concern, your skin needling treatment can begin right after your consultation. The treatment is not surgical, and it is minimally non-invasive. First, the doctor/nurse will apply a numbing cream to the skin, to minimize the pain. After the numbing cream sets in, the doctor/nurse will take a ‘pen like’ device, with hundreds of tiny needles that will slightly pierce the skin. These punctures are very small and cannot be seen, other than giving the skin a red, flushed look. This process encourages the production of collagen and elastin at the skin’s surface, resulting in smooth, fresh texture and tone.

Expected Results

It is normal for your skin to appear quite red for the first few hours. This redness settles rapidly though.

As one treatment does not dramatically remove all skin concerns, you may require multiple treatments for your ultimate skin rejuvenation. The number of treatments will depend on your skin concerns and desires.

Recovery time and possible micro needling side effects

Immediately following your treatment, your skin may be red and blotchy for 2-3 days as it heals. Common side effects include slight swelling, bruising, redness, dryness or flaking of the skin. If your needling treatment was more severe with deeper needles and punctures, you may also experience bleeding. For most patients, bleeding is not common, so if it occurs or if there are visible open wounds that appear on your skin, please let us know.

After your treatment, please follow these skin needling aftercare tips to minimize risks of infections or other more serious side effects:

Avoid exposure to the sun and always use a full spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to protect against UVA and UVB rays
For a few days following the treatment, keep skin clean and do not apply foundation or powder makeup
To avoid infection, do not engage in strenuous exercise or any activity that causes excessive perspiration, such as hot baths or showers, for 48 hours after the treatment
Do not scratch or pick at dry or flaky skin, as this can cause irritation or infections
Before and after your treatments, do not use medications that contain Vitamin A acid, including retinoic acid, glycolic acid, and alpha-hydroxy acids

Frequently Asked Questions

Is skin needling safe for my skin?

Since skin needling is topical minimally invasive the risks are very low, and the results are always healthier, brighter skin.  Skin needling has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment for diminishing wrinkles, age (sun) spots, and dark and depression scars. The procedure is usually for the face, but other uses also include healing for scars and stretch marks on other areas of the body.

What are the skin needling risks?

It is important to note that while the risks for damage are relatively low, every cosmetic treatment has its own risks, especially if there is not proper care for the skin after your procedure.

The most common side effects for skin needling are redness, tenderness or bruising, and dry or flaking while the skin heals. Potential side effects or complications from needling include infection, prolonged redness or grazing and hyper and/ or hypo pigmentation if you prematurely expose your skin to the sun.

Resurfacing of the skin can often trigger the herpes virus to flare up (cold sores). If you suffer from cold sores or skin ailments, please let us know prior to your treatment.

There are also treatments on the market for micro needling at home. While popular, it is important to note that the devices for at-home use are not designed to pierce or break the surface of the skin.
